50 years ago today Padua Academy dedicated our Broom Street building. There is no question it was a labor of love, even if, as Brother Mike has said, it was a “little crazy” to undertake such a large project so dependent on volunteer labor and the generosity of a community. In 1965, Father Roberto received approval for a “new” Padua Academy, and just four short years later they broke ground. By September of 1971, Father Roberto’s vision was well underway as students attended classes on Broom Street for the first time, even as construction continued. In that final stretch, countless volunteers came together to finish the school. The families, volunteers, donors and students did what Father Roberto always knew was possible. As he said, “Trust in God and help from people who value Catholic education for our girls can accomplish wonders.”
As we mark this milestone, we express our deep gratitude for the immeasurable hours of volunteer labor, the many donations of materials, and the commitment of so many that resulted in our “school with a soul” on North Broom Street.
"Trust in God and help from people who value Catholic education for our girls, can accomplish wonders," words from our Padua Academy 1971 request for support when the school at its current location opened and welcomed 367 girls to a full schedule of four year high school classes. Construction continued.
